No-one has seen God and it is, in one limited sense, not possible to "prove" He exists. On the other hand, there is a great deal of evidence to prove that He simply must exist.
The universe itself, its order and precision, is evidence of God's existence. The only alternative to believing that God created the universe is to assume that by a random series of chance events all that is seen in the universe simply fell into place. This includes the fact that planet earth is at just the right distance from the sun. Any closer and we would burn up; any further away and we would be a frozen ball. It includes the fact that the earth is tilted at just the right angle to the sun to create seasons - which allows for the growth of the crops that feed and sustain us. It includes the fact that the gravitational pull of the sun is just sufficient to hold earth in its perfectly placed orbit. A stronger pull would suck us in to a fiery destruction; a weaker pull and we would spin off into the outer universe and death. And so it goes on. This universe, and particularly our corner of it, works perfectly. It needed a Designer to create such precision.
And what of the fact that there is a universe at all? Science would tell us it started with a Big Bang. If the Big Bang was an explosion of material - where did that material come from? That's a question that science hasn't answered.
Evolution tells us that a simple organism evolved into the complex beings that we are, as well as all other forms of animal life. Yet science also states that any organism, left to itself and without outside interference, will do the reverse and go from the complex to the simple. It should be remembered that although it is taught as fact, Darwin's Theory of Evolution is just that - a theory. Science has failed to prove evolution and so it cannot become scientific Law, but remains a theory, an idea, a proposition. There isn't the space here to examine evolution fully, but here is a simple question: If all land based life evolved from a simple cell organism that emerged from a primeval swamp millions of years ago, how and why did that organism evolve into tens of thousands of different species ranging from man down to the tiniest ant? As the climatic, environmental and ecological conditions were the same across the earth, why didn't all life forms evolve similarly and, therefore, result in only one life form? Similarly, if we are descended from apes, why are there still apes? And what of Darwin's "Missing link" - it is still missing!! Evolution raises far more questions than it answers, whether it is missing links or millions of years of missing fossil records. This isn't the place to look at evolution in minute detail, but when the evidence is examined the theory of evolution is impossible to defend - and impossible to change from scientific theory to scientific Law.
Another evidence for the existence of God is the human body itself. No computer can match our brain, no machine can self-lubricate, maintain and correct malfunctions the way our body does, no camera can match the intricacies of the human eye and no tool can match the flexibility and dexterity of the human hand. Did we really evolve in such a way by pure random chance? Such an idea is far harder to believe than the more reasonable assertion that we are the result of a Divine plan.
Why do we experience a sense of wonder inside us when we hold a newborn baby, or when we view a starlit sky or marvel at a stunning sunset? What of the amazement we experience when we see the incredible intricacies of nature - the variety, the beauty and the majesty.
In the face of such revelations, we may often feel a stirring inside, "What is life all about? Where do I fit in? Is there more to it than just this life? Is there a God?"
There is a place in the Bible, Ecclesiastes 3:11, where is says, "God has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end." The fact that we wonder about eternity, through wondering at the beauty of creation or marvelling at a new born life, is part of God's plan to draw us all close to Him.
Once the evidence is examined, it is very hard to come to any conclusion other than that there is a God.
Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America at the time of their Civil War, once said, "It is not believing that's difficult, it's not believing that's difficult!"
This is just a very quick overview of some of the evidence for God's existence. If you have any questions about the issues referred to here, or any other questions, please e-mail your questions for a personal response.
